We pulled our latest lab results on the leaf mulch and wanted to share some of it, because honestly most people never see this kind of thing.
One number that jumped out the Compost Maturity Index came back as Early-Cure. For a finished compost that might sound like a red flag, but for leaf mulch that's actually a good thing. It means the material is still actively breaking down, which is exactly what you want from mulch. It's not done feeding your soil yet. It keeps going.
As it continues to break down it's releasing real nutrients β nitrogen at 1.07%, phosphorus at 0.14%, potassium at 0.34%, calcium at 1.80%, and magnesium at 0.31% on a dry basis. Organic matter tested at 73.7%, which is what's driving all of that breakdown and feeding your soil biology along the way.
Water holding capacity came back at 228% on a dry basis. That's more than double its weight in water it can hold huge for beds that dry out fast.
This is why leaf mulch isn't just something you put down and forget about. It's working the whole time it's on your bed, slowly releasing what's in it as it breaks down, right up until it finishes its job and becomes part of your soil.
