Today, we remember the lives lost, the heroes who responded, and the resilience that emerged from one of our nation's darkest days.
This photo, taken by one of our structural engineers during a family visit to the 9/11 Memorial Museum, shows the historic slurry wall at Ground Zero. When the World Trade Center towers collapsed on September 11, 2001, engineers feared the wall would fail, allowing millions of gallons of water from the Hudson River to flood Ground Zero, endangering recovery efforts and much of Lower Manhattan.
Against all expectations, the wall held.
Cracked, shifted, and scarred, it endured immense forces and ultimately helped prevent further devastation. Today, it remains preserved as a symbol of strength, resilience, and survival.
As engineers, we are reminded that the structures we design can have impacts far beyond what we imagine. On this day of remembrance, we honor those we lost and reflect on the enduring power of resilience in the face of unimaginable challenges.
