The Government of India is set to increase the country’s nuclear power generation capacity with plans to commission more nuclear plants.

Union Minister for Atomic Energy Dr Jitendra Singh said that the government has granted approvals for ten new reactors, as well as an administrative approval and financial sanction for ten pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs).

The indigenous PHWRs, each with 700MW of capacity, will be set up in fleet mode.

The new reactors are expected to increase India’s nuclear power generation capacity to 22,480MW by 2031.

For the most part, big tech companies have already committed to achieving zero emissions from their activities. Given the companies’ role as often-emulated “trendsetters”, these targets set an important example for the rest of the economy. But it is their work in digitalisation. Artificial intelligence and information systems could be potential game-changers in creating the more intelligent, flexible energy systems needed to reduce net-zero emissions.

Climate change is the defining challenge of this generation. Reaching a net-zero economy will require all-encompassing efforts across governments, consumers and private companies. Digital technologies are not a silver bullet for tackling climate change, but strong climate policies and corporate action can help guide the application of digital technologies in the right places to accelerate clean energy progress.
