Most ponds fail because of this one mistake…

Building a pond is more than just moving dirt. If the native soil won’t hold water, you have two options: a liner or bentonite.

In almost every case, bentonite is the better solution. It blends into the soil to create a natural seal instead of relying on a sheet that can tear, puncture, shift, or have poorly bonded seams. It also eliminates the eyesore of an exposed liner.

This 1-acre pond received 135,000 lbs of bentonite to seal it properly.

Each 3,000 lb supersack gets spread, disked into the soil, compacted, and graded before moving to the next layer.

It’s not the flashy part of pond building… but it’s what separates a pond from a very expensive hole in the ground.

Would you fish this when it’s full? 🎣

Waterline install last week… 💧

Sometimes the ground cooperates.

Sometimes it turns into a mud pit.

Cody Burns with Burns Concrete & Excavating , LLC was thugging it out, knee deep in mud! We had a few good laughs that day.. one being an accidental swan dive into a foot of soupy mud.

Here is a pond that was build and had a liner installed. It was obvious that it was still leaking from the dam. After pumping it down and looking over the liner we noticed it was leaking around the seams and around the dock post and through the back if the dam. The owner decided he wanted the liner out and to cut the damn all the way out to make sure it had a core trench. We ended up making it bigger and deeper than it was. It now has a good clay core trench along with 3 semi loads of Bentonite. Everyone that knows lower Adams county is very familiar with an abundance of rock. We had to hand pick buckets and buckets full of rock to get good clay with minimal rock. Stay tuned to see if we made it hold water !
