Ruddy began working in the compressed gas industry as a child, delivering acetylene tanks via the subway around New York City. After returning home from WWII and the Korean war, he purchased T.W. Ruddy expanded his business with the acquisition of General Welding Supply Corp. located in Westbury. Ralph Cohan, who is now the Vice President of GWS, started with the company in 1981. Ruddys children,

Robert and Joanna, followed in their fathers footsteps. The businesses are run independently today, with Robert at the helm of T.W. Smith, and Joanna running General Welding Supply. Hanny's children, Nicholas and Kristen, have also joined the business. They are both very proud to be the third generation involved in the business! In 2000 General Cryogenic Technologies was born. Cryo Tech was the first company on Long Island to offer microbulk delivery of liquid nitrogen and oxygen. We currently have three microbulk delivery trucks servicing Long Island. In 2007, General Welding opened an on-site gas analysis laboratory. This lab allows us to fill high purity gases on-site, ensuring quality and a fast turnaround time for many specialty gas customers.
