A promising generation technology can fail if fuel is unavailable. An attractive commercial model can stall over permitting or land. A workable onsite design can lose its advantage as utility conditions change.

That’s why BYOP evaluation cannot be linear. New findings should pressure-test earlier assumptions and redirect the project when conditions change. That’s disciplined development, not a failed process.

BYOP should advance only when dedicated generation creates a more viable overall development path after technical, commercial, permitting, fuel, site, and operating requirements are fully considered.

The first question in a bring your own power (BYOP) strategy should not be, “Which generation technology should we use?”

It should be: “Does dedicated generation create a more viable path to development?”

BYOP can introduce new fuel, permitting, land, emissions, interconnection and long-term asset risks. Moving a constraint from the utility to another part of the project is not progress unless the overall path becomes more viable.
