Celebrating 50 years of Shelter Systems means celebrating the people who built it.

At our 2026 Annual Awards & Casino Night, we had the privilege of recognizing the team members who continue to shape our success. With 79% of our workforce having been with us for five years or more, our strength has always been rooted in dedication, loyalty, and shared purpose.

As we look back on moments like these throughout our 50th anniversary year, we’re reminded that our greatest accomplishment isn’t just what we build—it’s who we build it with.

Shelter Systems started 50 years ago - with 5 employees, 1 saw, and 3 truss assembly stations. We're proud to be a third generation family-owned business,

Currently, our leadership includes Linda Hikel, Joe Hikel, and Lenny Mills. Joe's sons Jason and Ryan also help lead the company as very important part of the management team - truly encapsulating the meaning of family-owned and operated. Throughout the generations, the Hikel family believes in bringing people together for a common cause: excellence and innovation in manufacturing.

Beyond our support of Carroll County Government Maryland, MD, our staff are always an inspiration in their volunteerism! Just a couple examples:

🩷Every year the whole team wears pink and Shelter Systems donates to the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Fund.
🎁We get together during the holiday season to make Christmas stockings for the Children's Impact Network.
📐Shelter Systems donated pallets for use packaging essential supplies, arranged by our staff with the Maryland National Guard .

We love making an impact, and there's nothing better than supporting the next generation of carpenters and builders.

🪚🪵 Over the decades, Shelter Systems has partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carroll County, the Carpentry Program at Carroll County Career Technology Center, and the Carroll County Youth Service Bureau, Inc. - just to name a few.
