New Elk Coal Placed on Care and Maintenance
May 8, 2023

New Elk Coal has idled operations at the New Elk Coal Mine near Weston, Colorado. The mine will be placed into ‘care and maintenance’ with a small team of employees ensuring the safety of the underground workings and keeping the mine in compliance with our environmental responsibilities. While the company has been operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy conditions since February, this decision comes as the mine has not generated positive cashflow to alleviate the company’s financial problem, and the support of our key lender is insufficient to fund ongoing operations.

The company is actively looking for new investors with interest in purchasing the mine under the conditions approved by the Chapter 11 bankruptcy process, and it is our fervent hope that they would restart operations to continue the development of the substantial steelmaking coal resources at the New Elk property.

The company acknowledges the significant contribution of our employees over the last two years and hopes that a new owner will take advantage of the skills now available in the district to support the operation in the future.

They will compete against the Las Ánimas County 1st Responders in custom made 1908 replica Coal Camp uniforms designed by The PECOS League Commissioner Andrew Dunn, and commissioned by the New Elk Coal Company.

This game is a Celebration of our Coal Mining Heritage and everyone is invited to attend. For the price of 1 ticket, Fans can watch 2 games.

The Gate opens at Noon for pregame festivities, including a Meet & Greet with the Triggers and the 1st Responders. Come out! GO TRIGGERS!

New Elk Coal Company Update
March 9, 2023

Allegiance Coal Limited, the Australian-based parent company of New Elk Coal, has entered bankruptcy protection because its major lender, Collins Street Convertible Note Fund in Australia, is demanding repayment of its A$42.9 million debt. As a result of the action of the lender, its US subsidiaries, which includes New Elk Coal, also needs to seek Chapter 11 protection. Our plan is to keep the mine and the business operating under this protection and have been before the court seeking these arrangements.

At this stage, there is little effect on staffing and operations. We are continuing our recruitment efforts and everyone in the company is currently working together, mining and processing coal, for a metallurgical coal sale out of the Port of Mobile.

The leadership remains confident about the future prospects of New Elk and aims to continue operations as the company restructures as a fully operating mine. We believe this is the best way to serve employees, communities, and debt holders.

Further updates will be provided as the process continues.

Our first inaugural $15,000 community legacy donation will be given to Las Animas County to complete construction of a new outdoor basketball facility at the Las Animas County Fairgrounds.

“Our goal is to build on the multi-generational legacy of mining in our region, to support and strengthen our local community,” said Jon Romcke, CEO.
