This video was created by East River at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Mitchell Tech Underground facility. Traverse Electric, along with all East River and South Dakota cooperatives, donated to make this happen. This facility will provide invaluable training to future lineworkers.

In accordance with Minnesota’s Cold Weather Rule, electric service cannot be disconnected for nonpayment between Oct. 1 and April 30 if electricity is the primary heat source and ALL of the following statements apply:
• Your household income is at or below 50% of the state median household income. Income may be verified on forms provided by Traverse Electric Cooperative or by the local energy assistance provider.
• You enter into and make reasonable timely payments under a payment agreement that considers the financial resources of the household.
• You receive referrals to energy assistance, weatherization, conservation, or other programs likely to reduce your energy bills from Traverse Electric Cooperative.
MINNESOTA’S COLD WEATHER RULE DOES NOT COMPLETELY STOP WINTER DISCONNECTS.
Before disconnecting electric service to residential members between Oct. 1 and April 30, Traverse Electric Cooperative must provide:
• A 30-day notice of disconnection;
• A statement of members’ rights and responsibilities;
• A list of local energy assistance providers;
• Forms on which to request Cold Weather Rule
protection; and
• A statement explaining available payment plans and
other options to continue service

⚠️Portable generators can be helpful during long outages, but they must be used safely. Improper use can lead to electric shock, fire or deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.

🔌Never plug a generator into a wall outlet. A qualified electrician should install it with a transfer switch to help prevent backfeed, which can send electricity onto utility equipment and endanger lineworkers or others near downed lines. Storms can happen any time of year, and the best time to prepare is before severe weather is in the forecast. As we recognize National Preparedness Month, take a few minutes this week to build or refresh your emergency kit. Include essentials like bottled water, nonperishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, medications, phone chargers and important documents.

The Briggs & Stratton generators that we sell and install are programmed to do the routine bi-annual burn off exercise this afternoon and run approximately 45 minutes. This happens every September and April 1st.
