Does your home use a well? đź’§
Your well won’t tell you when something’s wrong — but a simple water test can.

Private residential wells in Michigan aren’t routinely tested like public water systems, so it’s up to homeowners to make sure their water is safe.

Many contaminants can’t be seen, tasted, or smelled, so regular testing and basic maintenance — including caring for the area around your well — are essential for protecting your drinking water and your health.

Its Freeze Fact Friday! When a well pipe bursts or freezes, the sudden loss of pressure can create a vacuum, posing a risk of back-siphonage. This means non-potable or contaminated water can be sucked back into your system or even your well.

Prevention is Key: Insulate all exposed pipes (indoor and out) now.

Know the Valve: Immediately locate and shut off your main water valve to stop the flow and protect your well from back-siphonage if a pipe bursts.

Test Post-Repair: After any major plumbing repair caused by freezing, WellOwner.org recommends testing your water for bacteria to ensure your system’s integrity wasn't compromised.
