Demand for electricity continues to grow and New York State’s aging grid cannot keep pace. Summer heat waves and severe storms will only put more stress on the grid. In its newly issued 2026 Report, NYS grid operator, NYISO, warns of our aging power grid’s ability to meet peak demand this summer, stating that “…the electric system is operating with the narrowest reliability margins in recent years.” will strengthen grid resiliency and reliability. New York State’s grid operator is again sounding the alarm on our aging electric grid’s ability to meet peak demand during severe heat or weather events this summer. In its annual summer reliability assessment, it estimates that already thin reliability margins during times of peak demand will be the lowest in recent history, with an almost 80% decline since 2022.
