Demand for electricity continues to grow and New York State’s aging grid cannot keep pace. Summer heat waves and severe storms will only put more stress on the grid. In its newly issued 2026 Report, NYS grid operator, NYISO, warns of our aging power grid’s ability to meet peak demand this summer, stating that “…the electric system is operating with the narrowest reliability margins in recent years.” will strengthen grid resiliency and reliability. Economic development projects across Westchester County that are helping to attract and retain businesses and residents depend on reliable infrastructure. As Ron Kamen, Director of The Business Council of Westchester’s Clean Energy Action Coalition, points out, “When most people think of core infrastructure, they picture roads, bridges, and sewers.” However, “while those are all critical, there is another piece of the puzzle that all too often is overlooked—our electric transmission system.”

Read Ron’s full op-ed for more on rising energy demand, grid reliability challenges, and why projects like are essential.

As communities across the state grapple with affordability, housing issues, and how to keep future generations here with good paying jobs, one thing is clear; development is at the heart of it all. Here in Westchester, communities across the county are undertaking smart development. New York State’s grid operator is again sounding the alarm on our aging electric grid’s ability to meet peak demand during severe heat or weather events this summer. In its annual summer reliability assessment, it estimates that already thin reliability margins during times of peak demand will be the lowest in recent history, with an almost 80% decline since 2022.
will increase grid reliability by creating new pathways to ensure power can reach our homes and businesses during severe weather and peak demand. Read more about expected energy shortfalls here: https://www.utilitydive.com/news/extended-heat-wave-poses-risk-to-new-yorks-grid-this-summer-iso/818509 PropelNYEnergy

Electric reliability margins will be “the lowest ... in recent history” at just 417 MW available under baseline summer conditions, the New York Independent System Operator said Friday.
