May is Affordable Housing Month, and Fahe is celebrating the people and organizations making a difference in Appalachia amid the affordable housing crisis.

After a flood in 2022, Clova Short spent three years in her flood-ravaged home in eastern Kentucky. She searched for somewhere safe, affordable, and accessible for her granddaughter.

Fahe Member H.O.M.E.S. Inc. helped Clova and her family find a home that met their needs, with a mortgage payment less than the cost of renting and electric bills lower than what she was paying.

“This home is a blessing, especially for my granddaughter,” Clova said. “I don’t have to worry every time it rains that it will flood again, and I am just so thankful.”

A day to celebrate 🎉🏡

Today, we closed on Dewey’s house, the last home on Thompson Branch! After everything Dewey has endured since the flood, including over 40 months living in a small camper, this moment feels especially meaningful. He’s now settled into a brand-new solarized house where the electric bills are estimated to be under $24/ month…best of all, this home will never flood!

The team fro Brethren Disaster Ministries joined us to mark the occasion with a house blessing for Dewey and his neighbor Jane, making the day even more special.

We are incredibly grateful for the many partnerships and supporters who helped make The Cottages at Thompson Branch a reality. 💙🙌

Big progress days like this deserve a pause and a little recognition! 💪🏽🏡

Today, the HOMES staff wrapped up Phase 3 of our five-year strategic roadmap, a big milestone in the work ahead. Huge thanks to Rural Support Partners and Thomas Watson for being an incredible consulting partner. Their deep ties to Appalachia and real understanding of the challenges nonprofits face make all the difference as we work to address the housing crisis in our region.
