Energy prices often start in financial markets.

Forward curves, futures contracts, and congestion costs all help shape how electricity and natural gas are bought and sold.

But customers donโ€™t consume energy on a trading screen.

That is why procurement strategy needs to connect market pricing with physical delivery, usage patterns, and contract structure.

A strong energy plan should not only track where markets are moving, but it should also explain what those movements mean for the energy your business uses.

That is where better data, market insight, and customer-specific strategy make a difference.

NYMEX data sits at the center of how energy markets take shape.

It is not only a key signal for natural gas pricing. It is also a major driver of electricity costs.

Its movement feeds directly into forward curves, influencing when pricing becomes attractive and how contracts are structured.

For energy supply partners, this becomes a question of when to lock in, how to layer fixed positions over time, and how much exposure to leave open as markets move.

The signal is always there.

The advantage comes from how itโ€™s interpreted and applied.

The 2025 NYISO Power Trends Report highlights a market in transition.

Generator retirements continue to outpace new additions, while electrification steadily increases demand. The result is a tighter capacity environment and more price volatility.

At the same time, the system is balancing near-term reliability with long-term decarbonization.

These shifts shape how procurement strategies are built. Capacity, reliability, and pricing are becoming more closely linked.

Dispatchable generation, demand-side management, and repowering efforts are all active parts of that equation.

Electricity markets begin adjusting to potential summer demand months in advance as forecasts, fuel supply, and system planning start shaping expectations.

- Early temperature outlooks
- Natural gas storage levels
- Planned generation outages
- Transmission constraints

As those signals evolve, pricing structures for summer delivery months begin to move accordingly.

For organizations managing significant electricity load, those early shifts can influence both contract timing and exposure decisions.

By the time cooling demand materializes, much of the market positioning has already taken place.

Weather still drives some of the biggest swings in energy markets.

A heat wave or cold snap can push demand higher almost overnight. When the grid has plenty of supply, thatโ€™s manageable.

When it doesnโ€™t, prices can move fast.

In New York, those weather events are hitting a system with tighter margins and more localized constraints. That means the same temperature swing can have a much bigger impact than it did a few years ago.

Itโ€™s not just the weather itself. Itโ€™s how it interacts with:

Transmission congestion
Available generation
Overall supply margins

That combination is what turns normal demand spikes into pricing events.

For customers with market exposure, these periods are where costs can escalate quickly.

Which is why energy strategy isnโ€™t just about tracking prices, itโ€™s about understanding how your position holds up when the grid is under stress.

05/05/2026

Electric price spikes donโ€™t happen randomly.

Theyโ€™re often a sign that the grid is running with less margin for error.

In New York, reserve margins are tightening. According to the New York Independent System Operator Gold Book, the system has seen a net loss of over 2,000 MW of capacity since 2019, while demand is projected to grow ~7% by 2030 and over 16% by 2035.

That gap matters.

When thereโ€™s less excess supply available, the market becomes more sensitive. Routine events โ€” a cold stretch, a generator outage, transmission constraints โ€” can drive much larger price swings than they would in a looser system.

Thatโ€™s exactly what we saw this past winter.

For large energy users, these periods arenโ€™t just volatility. Theyโ€™re moments where costs can move quickly and significantly, especially for those with market exposure.

This is where energy strategy becomes critical.

Itโ€™s not just about where prices are today. Itโ€™s about how your business is positioned when the grid tightens and those price spikes become more frequent.

Understanding reserve margins isnโ€™t just a market exercise.

Itโ€™s a way to anticipate risk before it shows up on your bill.
