We serve customers throughout the southeastern U.S. Utility Management Services, Inc. (UMS) is the largest and most successful firm of its type in the Southeast. Since 1998, we have secured over $150 million in savings for our customers by uncovering overcharges, billing errors and ongoing savings opportunities. In recent years, we have become increasingly active in the design of utility rates. We have intervened in front of state regulators on behalf of our customers in utility rate cases. We strive to make changes in the design and structure of utility rates to make the rates more fair and to save money for our customers. Recently, we intervened in a utility rate case on behalf of a Fortune 500 customer. As a result of that work, we achieved $ 2,700,000 in annual utility bill reductions for that customer. In some cases there are charges on utility bills that utility companies automatically apply to the bills of all of their customers. Some customers are exempt from some of those charges. The customer must know that he is exempt and must take action to remove the charges and get refunds for the over payments. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY The founder of UMS, Brian Coughlan, started his career in 1982 as an Industrial Power Engineer at a major U.S. utility. He provided customer service and technical/engineering assistance to manufacturers and governmental agencies. He discovered that many customers were paying much more than they should for electricity simply because they did not know about or understand the many complex rate alternatives that were available. He went on a mission to help each of his business customers buy electricity at the lowest available rate for their particular needs and usage characteristics. Shortly thereafter, he was called on the carpet by his boss and told that he was not to inform customers of the lower available rate options. He was told that the power company was a for-profit corporation with a responsibility to our shareholders to maximize earnings and profits. He was told that it was up to the customers to find out about the lower rates and determine which was the best for their needs. He didn't realize it at the time, but the initial seed of UMS was planted in that meeting. Fifteen years later, Brian was managing a workforce of 500 people at the power company. He and his staff provided engineering and customer service to more than 300,000 customers. They were continuing to follow the unwritten company-wide rule of intentionally not informing customers of the lower available rate options. He decided to leave the power company and founded UMS to help customers lower their utility bills. The rest is history.
