Polysulfone cages are a significant line item. If your facility is replacing them more frequently than expected, you might want to look at your disinfectant.

In a recent study, a hydrogen peroxide-based competitor caused visible cage etching after one autoclave cycle, cracking after three, and cages that were no longer serviceable after six. Meanwhile a Quip Labs phenolic-based disinfectant tested under the same conditions showed no visible damage after ten cycles.

Most barrier facilities and BSL-2 environments have spore-formers on their exclusion list. A disinfectant that covers vegetative bacteria well but has no sporicidal label claim doesn't meet that requirement, regardless of how well it works on other bacteria.
