Coast Iron Works

Coast Iron Works We design, manufacture and install custom ornamental iron work for both residential and commercial applications. Things sure have changed.

Coast Iron Works is one of the oldest businesses in the Greater Long Beach area. We still have one of the original 500 telephone numbers issued in the city! In 1914, Ivor Bell established The Coast Welding Company in San Pedro, California. The company started as a blacksmith shop focused on blacksmithing and fishing boat repair and quickly earned a reputation as the best place in town to have you

r horse re-shod or your boat repaired. With the rise of the automobile, the business slowly began to evolve to a full scale welding and metal fabricating operation. Jack and Bob Bell took over the business when their father retired in the 1940’s, and they continued expand the business, performing an ever-widening variety of welding and metal fabrication. After Bob Bell passed away in 1971, Jack decided it was time to sell the company. Joe Martinez purchased the company in 1972 and refocused it for the design, fabrication, installation of custom ornamental ironwork for both residential and commercial applications. Joe retained Roger Manatt, one of the older, highly skilled blacksmiths, and so began a relationship that spanned many years – Roger’s work can still be seen all over Southern California today. In 2012, after forty years of hand-crafting wrought iron concepts, Joe decided to sell the business, which had by now been transformed into a team of designers, fabricators, and installers focused entirely on ornamental wrought iron and statue and fountain restoration. Jim Peterson, the owner of a Michigan company with a very similar vision and a blacksmith himself, purchased The Coast Welding Company from Joe, and Coast Iron Works was born. Jim retained all of the talented fabricators and designers, as well as the company’s focus on ornamental wrought iron concepts paired with statue and fountain restoration. The company continues today with a near century-old commitment to excellence through high-quality, creative design, and impeccable craftsmanship.

Well, I posted the picture to the right a few months ago; the fancy job in Manhaten Beach. We are just completeing that project this week. As you can see, the Owner has great taste. I see two things as being important to producing a good product. One is the idea or concept, and the second is the quality of the ex*****on. Neither is enough on its own. A great design or idea is not fully expressed and communicated if the craftsmanship is poor. Likewise superior crafting of a poor design tends to be empty and unsatisfying. We need both together; it’s simple, but not always so easy.

Another project recently completed. This was 150 feet of custom contempory barrier fencing. We designed it with CAD and had the parts precut. We made it, hot dipped galvanized it and then painted and installed the 150 of fence. It was a big project involving many aspects of our business. A real confidence builder for our Team. We always feel like we can tackle the largest projects after doing one like this! It was by the way, on time and to the customers budget.

We just finished a creative project for the Adler Estate on PV. This is large decorative light near the entrance to the house. It is made from 1 1/2 x 1 steel bar. It takes much, much more effort to work with this material.

We always like to have customers visit our Shop. Its really fun to discuss the design alternatives and the processes. I like to have our Fabricators meet the customer and see who they are working for; I think that adds alot to personal satisfaction for an employee. Not to mention, the customer gets to see who is doing the work. In fact, customers are invited to visit the Shop when their own project is underway; and to work on it themselves. We can even make a video that could later be shown to friends. That would add to the pride factor! Anyways, we have thousands of pictures of past projects that can be used to come up with the perfect design. Oftentimes, a customer will bring their Interior Designer with them to assist. Here is a picture of Mrs. Marty and her Designer doing just this! Afterwards, they went to Crusty Crab Restaurant at the Fishermans Pier in San Pedro for Lunch. So please visit us when you get the chance.

Oftentimes a customer has seen an item while traveling that they fall in love with. If this sounds familiar, please take a picture and take some rough dimensions!! We just love to reproduce items; if we can see em, we can make em!

A customer recently came to the studio with a picture of an ancient candelabra and wanted to know if we could make one. Here are a few pictures. We even put a faux finish on it to imitate the original.

Please bring us all your ideas and we can make them come true within your budget. We saved the cusomer many hundreds of dollars on the candelabra.

The new cover photo is one of our favorite projects to date. This is at the Rice Residence in Palos Verdes and this has been featured in many high-end advertising campagns over the years.Coast Iron Works did all the interior and exterion ironwork including the front entry doors. We are very proud of the craftsmanship and design of this railing. As you can see, ironwork done in a tasteful way really makes a statement!

This is a curved staircase at a high end residence in Manhatten Beach. I met with the builder yesterday to see the project and to begin to develop some design ideas. The homeowner is evidently undecided on wether to use iron or wood. In my humble opinion, ironwork allows for unlimited design flexibility and creativity. This is an elegant contemporary property and I think wood is more for a tudorr mansion! We have THOUSANDS of JPG pictures of various designs made of iron that we use with customers to "home in" on the right design. The right design is a matter of artwork; everyone has different taste. The fun is to help the designer achieve his/her vision! The railings are a huge opportunity to add character and taste to a home and it should not be ignored. Stay tuned and I will provide updates as the process unfolds with the Homeowner and the Builder!!! Bye the way, this staircase is called a CURVED STAIRCASE, not a spiral (a spiral goes around a center pipe; we also make those). It is a compound helix and is the most difficult and expensive to make. I know that in the Midwest, there is only 1 place to have these stringers rolled. Please visit later to see the progress!!
