This space was always intended to feel darker and more grounded, but storage still needed to be worked into the design without making the room feel heavy.

What started as a decorative wall detail turned into concealed storage built directly into the paneling.
Using push to open cabinetry allowed the wall to keep its clean appearance while adding functional space for appliances and overflow storage.

Finding ways to add function without disrupting the design is usually where the best solutions come from.

This 11 Γ— 18 addition is built and closed in before tying it into the existing house.
Getting the new structure weather tight first limits exposure when the opening is made between old and new.

Next steps are siding the exterior and then breaking through to connect the spaces.

Appliances don’t always need to be the focal point of a kitchen.
In this layout, the refrigerator sits in a direct line of sight from the entry, so it was integrated into the cabinetry instead of being left exposed.

Paneling it to match the surrounding finishes keeps the wall consistent and allows the kitchen to read more like a built-in space rather than a collection of appliances.
Small decisions like this can have a big impact on how the room feels when you first walk in.

A larger island can completely change how a kitchen functions.
In this case, the size allows it to be used for prep, meals, and everyday activities all in one place.

Choosing a durable surface also matters when the island is used throughout the day, not just for cooking.
It becomes a central space for the whole family instead of just an added feature.

Framing is where the house starts to move from plans into real space.
It begins with structure, then shifts into interior walls, and finally into smaller details that support finishes later on.

This is also the stage where adjustments can still be made. Walking the space often reveals opportunities to improve layout, reclaim square footage, or rethink how a room functions before everything gets closed in.

Decisions made here directly impact how the home lives long term.

Adding a second window in the kitchen changed how the space reads.
Instead of one focal point, matching windows create balance and bring in more consistent natural light across the entire wall.

Small changes like this can make the room feel more open without changing the overall footprint.

If your garage entry drops you straight into a bathroom or an unorganized space, it’s usually a layout problem, not a space problem.

In this renovation, the goal was to rethink how the entry functions day to day. By relocating the garage door and reworking the surrounding walls, the space now acts as a true transition into the home.

Adding a mudroom setup with dedicated drop zones gives every person a place for coats, bags, and shoes, which keeps the rest of the house from getting cluttered.

Small layout changes like this can have a bigger impact than adding square footage.
