Standby and portable generators are common options but are not without their dangers. As a hazardous materials technician with the fire department, I often responded to carbon monoxide alarms resulting from generators and other gas appliances inside the homes. Without these alarms many of the homeowners and their families would have fallen asleep and never woken up! If you decide to run a generator this year here are a few tips to keep your family safe:
1. Ensure the generator is running outside, away from the home and away from any air intakes in an area with good ventilation.
2. Install carbon monoxide detectors in your living areas, especially areas where your family will be during an outage and where they sleep.
3. Be alert to signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning including unexplained headache, dizziness and fatigue. When in doubt get outside, shut off the appliance, and call the fire department.
