Subframing selection isn't an afterthought; it's a critical design decision. The Berrie Expansion at Columbia University Irving Medical Center is a great example of why. Recent updates to NYC's building code have caused confusion around Metal Composite Material (MCM) and Aluminum Composite Material (ACM) rainscreen systems, with many assuming they're now prohibited.

They're not.

Section 718.2.6 focuses on proper fireblocking within concealed rainscreen cavities when combustible materials are used — not on banning specific cladding types. And yes, this applies to buildings under 40 feet, independent of NFPA 285 requirements.

The Black Hawk College Building 2 – Career & Tech Center Renovation in Moline, IL is a masterclass in what's possible when the right system meets an extraordinary challenge.

What made this project so remarkable? This 55-year-old building was completely transformed into a modern, cohesive academic facility, all while concealing an almost unbelievable amount of complexity behind the finished façade. We're talking 20+ wall-assembly combinations, cavity depths ranging from 1" to 14", five different existing substrate types, and three distinct cladding materials: Swisspearl high-density fiber cement panels, ACM, and Prodema HPL, all unified into one continuous, visually seamless exterior.

Our SigmaU Universal Wall Bracket family, every size from U.2 through U.12, was deployed across the entire building in both vertical and horizontal orientations, creating a coordinated subframing platform across varied and inconsistent existing substrate conditions. No separate systems. No patchwork solutions. Just one engineered approach that adapted to every substrate, every depth, and every cladding type.

Grateful to be part of the engineered rainscreen subframing solution for the new Gilcrease Museum, a $150M+ reimagining of one of America's premier museums of Western art and Native American history.

The Challenge: 19,000 SF of large-format architectural metal panel rainscreen across complex, non-rectangular geometry inspired by Osage cultural traditions. The façade required exceptional panel alignment, consistent joint spacing, and continuous cavity ventilation across numerous transitions and changing wall planes — while meeting the stringent durability requirements of a world-class museum protecting irreplaceable collections.

The Solution: Our subframing systems were integrated early in design, coordinating structural loading, thermal performance, moisture management, and attachment as a single engineered wall assembly. Intermittent stainless-steel Sigma wall brackets minimized thermal bridging, while the ventilated cavity promoted drainage and long-term moisture management. The system's built-in adjustability allowed the installation team to maintain precise panel alignment despite the building's complex geometry - without extensive field modification!

Looking back at an iconic project, the National Museum of African American History & Culture on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. This is more than a building; it's a landmark that represents the backbone of American history.

Designed by the celebrated Freelon Adjaye Bond / SmithGroup team, every detail of this structure was intentional. The iconic corona shape is inspired by a Yoruban caryatid column capital, while the 3,600 bronze-colored panels of the building's screen reference the ironwork crafted by African Americans across the American South. Even the front porch, a symbol of welcome and community, was deliberately incorporated into the design.

We're grateful to have supplied the engineered sub-framing system for the UHPC panels that helped bring the front entrance of this icon to life, supporting one of the most meaningful additons to the National Mall in recent years.

Completed in 2016, the NMAAHC continues to transform the role of civic architecture, and we are honored to have played a small part in its story.

We're proud to have delivered the engineered rainscreen subframing solution for Hobson College, Princeton University's new residential college complex currently under construction.

The Challenge: 34,000+ SF of shingle-format terracotta rainscreen across stepped elevations, compound angles, and multiple courtyard conditions, attached to a mass-timber structural system. The building's complex geometry and significant campus-grade changes demanded a subframing solution capable of accommodating wide variations in cavity depth, framing orientation, and field tolerances without relying on uncoordinated subframing components or extensive shimming.

The Solution: ECO Cladding's Sigma U (Universal) Bracket

The Sigma U thermally-broken stainless-steel bracket served as the single subframing building block across the entire envelope, supporting both vertical and horizontal framing orientations across cavity depths ranging from 2.5" to 13.75". Its built-in 1.5" of total adjustment allowed D.M. Sabia & Co. to maintain consistent shingle coursing across the building's irregular geometry without traditional field shimming. Non-combustible aluminum and stainless-steel system components addressed the exterior-wall fire strategy for the mass-timber structure.

At the same time, thermal modeling confirmed a wall assembly U-value of 0.064 — preserving 91–98% of the insulation's nominal effectiveness in support of the project's Passive House (PHIUS) and LEED Gold certification targets.
