Community Electric Cooperative

Community Electric Cooperative To safely provide our members exceptional, courteous, and reliable services at a competitive cost. James M. Reynolds served until his retirement in April 2013.

Founded in 1938, Community Electric Cooperative was created through the efforts of the Holland Ruritan Club and other community leaders to provide electrical service in Southeastern Virginia’s rural areas. In 1971, the Cooperative passed 1,000,000 man-hours without a lost-time accident. The record represented one of the best in the nation at the time. By January of 1975, Community Electric Coopera

tive had installed some 5,875 meters and 1,111 miles of line. Reynolds was hired in 1977 by the Co-op board of directors to succeed Jean Woodward as manager. Only the third CEO in its history, Steven A. Harmon took the helm in June 2013. In 1979, Community Electric Cooperative executed a wholesale power contract with Old Dominion Electric Cooperative, a generation-and-transmission cooperative. Initially, Old Dominion negotiated rates on behalf of Community Electric Cooperative and its other member systems. During the 1980s and 1990s, Old Dominion procured ownership of electric-generation facilities to support Community Electric Cooperative and the 11 other cooperatives which own Old Dominion. In 1983, Old Dominion acquired an 11.6 percent interest in the North Anna Nuclear Power Station. Old Dominion also owns a 50 percent interest in the Clover Power Station, which it built, and which went on-line in 1995. In addition to North Anna and Clover, Old Dominion has developed three peaking electric generation facilities to further support Community and the other 11 member cooperatives. Over the last 15 years, the Co-op has recorded a growth rate of roughly 1.5 percent per year in the number of meters connected. The Cooperative currently serves more than 11,000 accounts over its 1,590 miles of distribution line.

It's a pretty staggering statistic: nearly 50,000(!) home fires in the United States are caused by electrical failures or malfunctions each year, according to the National Fire Protection Association. An important way to lower the risk of an electrical fire is to avoid overloading circuits and outlets. The Electrical Safety Foundation International has as its mission "reduc(ing) electrical deaths, injuries, and fires through public education and outreach and by being the trusted voice on electrical safety." It is well worth the time to spend a few minutes going through the ESFI website and particularly its section on preventing overloaded electrical systems. Warmer weather has arrived, schools are letting out, and children are spending more time outdoors. With that in mind, it's important that they understand the basics of electrical safety. The nonprofit Energy Education Council has an excellent resource at the website (link below) safeelectricity.org. Take a look and share the information with your family, especially your children. Many electrical accidents ARE preventable.

"It only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season." Words to the wise on this, the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season, from storm forecasters at Colorado State University. There's no time like the present to ensure that your household has an emergency plan and kit in place and, for CEC member-owners interested in purchasing a standby generator, to take advantage of the 10 percent discount available to them from CEC's RECORE energy solutions subsidiary. “We are entering the time of year when the threat of tropical storms and hurricanes is common. We can’t let that ‘familiarity’ desensitize us to the dangers that will arise if and when the threat of a major storm becomes a reality,” Presson said. “I urge every household to have an emerge...

For those of you who read your monthly issue of Cooperative Living via the hard copy that you receive in the mail, as opposed to reading online, we apologize for the production error that has jumbled a few pages in the print version. You may have noticed a story about squirrels and power lines that seems to start in the middle of the article – because it does. Due to the error, only the second half of the story made it into print. You can read the complete story on Cooperative Living’s website now, at the link that follows, and we’ll have the full article in the July print issue of the magazine too. Some of the printing on the page 16 hurricane preparedness article also had some quality issues affecting the hues. We apologize for that deficiency as well and, likewise, invite you to read the digital version that you can access via our website.

Have you looked lately at the Home Energy Calculator on our website? It's a great tool to get a handle on your energy consumption and to identify ways to conserve before the real heat of summer descends upon us. An article we've just published on our website (link below) references the calculator and other resources that can help you boost your energy efficiency and save money on air conditioning as the temperatures climb. We encourage you to take a look. The savings add up, especially when conservation measures are implemented widely throughout our cooperative.

Given the heating bill spikes that accompanied our bone-chilling winter, it’s little solace that The Old Farmer’s Almanac is forecasting temperatures hotter than average along the East Coast this July and August. Cold or hot, when it’s on the extremes it causes higher electric bills.

You've got things to do, and it would help to save energy while you're busy doing them. So here are some quick tips on curbing your A/C use: Set thermostats to 78 degrees in the summer (or at least close to it); run ceiling fan paddles on medium, blowing down; change your HVAC filters regularly; make sure the filters are facing the correct direction when you install them; keep windows locked to seal better; caulk along baseboards with a clear sealant; insulate your attic access door; close shades and drapes during the day to keep heat out; ensure windows and doors are properly weather-stripped.
