- Did you know there are two basic methods for securing cargo?

- Direct Tie-Down – The tie-down is attached directly from the anchor point to the load, helping to prevent movement in a specific direction.

Indirect Tie-Down – The tie-down passes over or around the load and relies on tension to increase friction and keep the cargo secure.

Understanding the difference is an important part of proper load securement and safer transportation.

- Proper equipment securement starts with proper tension.

When securing heavy equipment for transport, make sure chains and binders are properly tensioned and positioned to help prevent shifting during transit. Always inspect tie-down points, securement hardware, and chain condition before hitting the road.

A few extra minutes spent checking your securement can make a big difference in transport safety.

- Summer means more boats, campers, utility trailers, and weekend adventures hitting the road. Before you tow, take a moment to check your trailer safety chains.

Always use trailer safety chains with the correct length and safety class—and don’t forget to cross them underneath the trailer tongue. Never shorten chains by tying knots or twisting them. Instead, safely secure excess chain length with tie wraps or another approved method.

- When lifting loads using multi-leg alloy chain slings, the hooks must be pointed away from the center of gravity. This allows the hook to lift towards the back of the hook rather than towards the tip. This will also lessen the likelihood of the hook disengaging through the throat when in slack conditions if no retainer latch is present.

- The most important component on an alloy chain sling might not be the chain itself - it’s the identification tag.

Per OSHA 1910.184, if a sling tag is missing or illegible, the sling must be removed from service. The identification tag provides critical information such as sling type, size, grade, capacity, and other details needed to help ensure proper use.

Take a moment to verify that your sling tags are present and readable before use. It’s a small check that plays a big role in safe lifting operations.
