For Beat the Heat week 2, the R.C. Stevens team is encouraging education surrounding the Heat Index.

The Heat Index is a system that combines relative humidity and temperature into one figure. The more humidity, the more danger of dehydration and overheating. It's imperative that preventative measures are put in place for when advisories or extreme heat events occur.

The NOAA bands have been outlined for worksite usage:

Less than 91F° (Caution), Basic heat safety and planning.

91 Fahrenheit to 103F° (Moderate), Implement precautions and increase awareness.

103F° to 115F° (High), Additional precautions to protect workers.

Greater than 115F° (Very High to Extreme), Triggers even more aggressive protective measures.

To mitigate the dangers of extreme heat in the workplace, communicate the daily heat index and the factors that affect temperature. Recognition of heat stress can save lives.

In honor of National Environment Day, R. C. Stevens highlights the Florida Fish and Wildlife (FWC) Apollo Beach Hatchery Project.

The build-out consisted of an addition/expansion of the Marine Fisheries Enhancement Center, where multiple species of fish are bred and released back into estuaries to protect and advance the health of Florida's ecosystem.

The aquaculture system carefully monitors the quality of seawater, freshwater, and sewage produced by the fish while tracking the temperatures and lighting for an optimal living environment.

The R. C. Stevens team constructed a 14,000 SF build-out comprised of an office, lab, and hatchery as well as a 5,640 SF prefabricated metal building. Eight existing tanks were upgraded, and six new tanks were incorporated. During this project, R. C. Stevens implemented a phased construction approach to complete both the build-out and hatchery expansion concurrently.

Man-made and environmental stress factors put Florida’s ecosystem at risk. Hatcheries like these can allow for a lower mortality rate whilst these species of fish bypass their fragile state during adolescence. The fish are given a safe space to grow and thrive before they are released into their respective environments, giving the population a chance to regenerate and the environment to flourish.

Kicking off the first week of Beat the Heat centered around adequate hydration!

With summer on our heels, it is crucial that we encourage proper hydration habits. The southeast will experience extremely elevated temperatures during the next few months.

Our hydration levels are constantly depleting when performing physical activity; the sun has a major effect on our body heat.

Worksite management should ensure that each team member has access to cold water, is educated on the symptoms of dehydration, and breaks are taken in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

Symptoms to look out for:
• Thirst
• Fatigue
• Muscle cramps
• Excessive sweating
• Nausea
• Dizziness or confusion
• Hot, dry skin

The recommended amount of water intake for the average adult is one quart per hour of physical exertion, but it's highly encouraged to have water distributed every 15 minutes per shift.

At R. C. Stevens, we execute these practices every day and enforce safety as a priority by compelling our team with campaigns like these!

By the mid-1930s, Raymond C. Stevens had quickly built a reputation—not only as a skilled builder, but as an exceptional architect. In 1934, he partnered with local builder Howard Kiehl to form Kiehl & Stevens Inc., a collaboration that would shape a wide range of residential and commercial projects.

Together, the firm delivered numerous notable designs, including one of Stevens’ earliest design-build commercial projects: the Orlando Utilities Commission office building in 1936. That same year, they completed a warehouse for Hughes Electrical Co. and renovations for the Sentinel Star. Their growing portfolio also included projects for Heintzelman Ford and a clubhouse at Dubsdread Golf Course.
A century of craftsmanship. A legacy of reliability.

Celebrating 100 years of building excellence—and a steadfast commitment to the next hundred.

R.C. Stevens had a blast attending the ABC of Central Florida and AIA Orlando Design + Build Mini Golf event last Thursday! RCS was represented by Project Manager Assistant Emma Ardell, MBA and newly welcomed interns Taylor Fournier and Naomi Mathias they collaborated to build a mini golf hole entirely from food items donated by the RCS team.
Friendly competition ensued as fellow participants played through the courses, a perfect opportunity to connect with our community and collaborate will fellow ABC members. All non-perishable food items were donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida in an effort towards community-give-back.

The first day of Intern Orientation was a success!
R. C. Stevens is so excited to welcome seven interns this year - our biggest group yet!
Over the next three months they will be getting hands on experience throughout the construction field, getting a better understanding of our industry.
We are so excited to see their growth and development over the course of the summer!

As part of our 100-Year Past President’s series, R. C. Stevens (RCS) would like to recognize and celebrate Allyn Stevens as he served as second company president from 1968 to 1993. While at RCS, he played an important part in keeping our original traditions, set by his father, yet pushing the company to new heights.

Construction Safety Week reinforces our responsibility as an industry to commit to the safety of our team.
This week we recognized the three pillars of Recognize, Respond, and Respect addressing the importance of proper planning with early hazard recognition, managing high energy hazards, and the respect we give ourselves and team to speak up about hazardous conditions making our jobs safer.

What Matters Moving Forward:

• Recognize Hazards Early
Early hazard identification allows teams to plan safely and apply controls before exposure occurs.

• Respond With Strong Controls
Effective protection comes from designing work to eliminate, reduce, or isolate hazards through planning, equipment selection, and physical safeguards.

• Respect the Plan and the People
Addressing hazards before work begins shows that people matter. Respect is demonstrated when plans are followed and concerns are taken seriously.

• Keep Speaking Up
Open communication and pause work authority prevent risk from becoming normalized, even when concerns turn out to be perceived.

• Commit Beyond the Week
Construction Safety Week is a reminder, not the finish line. Daily decisions and consistent standards determine how well we protect one another.

Planning alone does not keep people safe. Plans protect us only when they are followed, respected, and revisited when conditions change.
Today we highlight the last safety pillar of Construction Safety Week: Respect.
Respect shows up in daily decisions. It is demonstrated when procedures are followed, voices are heard, and teams stop to reassess instead of pushing ahead.
Respecting the plan means respecting lives. Let’s be All In Together by following the plan and making choices that send everyone home in better condition than they arrived.

Construction Safety Week gives us the opportunity to come together as an industry to give support and highlight the importance of safety across all construction sites.
This year’s headline is “All in Together” recognizing the improvements made to safety standards throughout the industry centralizing around the theme of: Recognize, Respond, and Respect.
Recognizing high energy hazards.
Respond by putting direct controls in place.
Respect every hazard, person and safety role by implementing controls to prevent accidents.
Today we emphasize Fall Protection and OSHA’s National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls, one the leading causes of fatalities and life altering injuries. These incidents are preventable through proper preparation, equipment, communication and awareness. Taking the precautions to slow down and speak up when potential hazards are seen, protects the team and ensures a safe work site.
