🔥 That first furnace run of the season can come with a smell… but is it normal?
After sitting unused all summer, your furnace can collect dust and debris. So when you turn it on for the first time, a brief dusty, musty, or slightly burning smell can be completely normal. It should fade as your furnace runs.
But some smells deserve attention. 🚨
NORMAL:
✔️ Dusty or musty smell
✔️ Mild “burning dust” smell
✔️ Brief stale/unused smell
CALL A PRO:
⚠️ Strong or persistent burning smell
⚠️ Chemical or electrical smell
⚠️ Smoke or unusual furnace behavior
And if you smell rotten eggs or sulfur, leave the area and contact your gas utility or emergency services. Don't try to find the source yourself.
