Today would have been Janis Research’s annual clambake, but due to COVID-19 we had to cancel. Here’s a flashback to last year’s gathering. It’s tradition that many employees like to wear Hawaiian shirts to the clambake. A couple of us decided to honor the clambake this year by wearing face masks made from Hawaiian shirts. We hope you are safe and well.

Today, Janis is celebrating Helium Conservation Day!

Did you know that helium gas is mined from the earth just like natural gas? It is considered a non-renewable resource because once it is released to the atmosphere, it is practically impossible to collect it. And, while new discoveries of helium reserves are getting harder, the world demand for the precious gas has been increasing.

In addition to making cool birthday balloons, liquid helium has a uniquely low boiling point of about 450 degrees Fahrenheit below zero! For this, it serves as the coolant for the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems and for the superconducting magnets in research labs. It also makes possible for researchers to study the properties of materials at low temperatures, which gives them a better understanding of how to develop new technologies for room temperature applications.

To make sure the future generations will have access to helium, Janis -being a leading cryogenic equipment manufacturer- invests in developing closed-cycle systems and recirculating cryocoolers to eliminate the loss of helium gas in cryogenic labs.
