Every application has unique thermal requirements. In one custom project, a manufacturer in the door and window industry needed a cast-in platen heater that could produce a controlled temperature gradient rather than the uniform heat distribution typically associated with cast-in heaters. Meeting that requirement called for more than a standard product, it required application-specific engineering.

Rather than relying on multiple rounds of physical prototypes, Tempco engineers used 3D modeling and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation to analyze heat flow, optimize heating element placement, and predict the heater's temperature profile before manufacturing began. This approach helped refine the design digitally while reducing development time and unnecessary prototype iterations.

Cast-in heaters are well suited for custom thermal applications because their geometry, watt density, and internal heating element configuration can be tailored to meet specific process requirements. Whether the goal is uniform heating or a specialized thermal profile, engineering the solution around the application can improve performance and efficiency.

Every thermal challenge is different, and the right design starts with understanding the process. If you're working through a unique heating application, contact our team to discuss your requirements and explore a custom solution.

When uniform temperature is critical, the way heat is delivered matters just as much as the heater itself. Cast-In heaters are designed with the heating element permanently embedded within a solid metal casting, allowing heat to spread efficiently through the casting before reaching the application. This construction helps provide excellent thermal transfer and consistent surface temperatures.

Because Cast-In heaters are custom engineered, they can be manufactured in a wide variety of shapes and configurations using aluminum, bronze, or brass. Precision-machined contact surfaces further improve heat transfer by maximizing contact between the heater and the equipment. Depending on the application, they can also incorporate cooling tubes or fins for processes that require both heating and cooling.

These advantages make Cast-In heaters a common choice for plastics processing equipment including extruders, dies, platens, blow molding, and injection molding, as well as semiconductor manufacturing and other industrial processes where reliable, uniform heating is important.

“The oven is the heart and soul of our machine.” For MAAC Machinery, that oven is central to the thermoforming process, where plastic sheet must be heated evenly to the proper forming temperature before it can become a finished part.

MAAC Machinery uses two sizes of Tempco Ceramic E-Mitters® and two sizes of Quartz Mini-Tube IR E-Mitters across approximately 85% of its machines. The common universal-mount format helps provide flexibility while keeping the oven design standardized.

Ceramic E-Mitters embed the resistance wire within the ceramic material, while Quartz Mini-Tube IR E-Mitters use a standard winding pattern designed to provide uniform heating across the heater face. Each technology offers distinct operating characteristics for different process requirements.

What began as a supplier relationship has grown into more than 21 years of collaboration. Explore how infrared heating, product standardization, and dependable supply come together in the full story: https://more.tempco.com/3x817

Fast response, concentrated heat delivery, and a range of available wavelengths make infrared technology adaptable to many demanding heating applications.

In our latest newsletter, we look at three examples of that flexibility. Discover how MAAC Machinery has standardized much of its thermoforming oven design around Tempco infrared elements and why dependable heating and supply have supported the relationship for more than two decades.

You’ll also learn how the characteristics of infrared heating extend beyond industrial processing into sauna applications, along with an aerospace project involving the simulation of commercial spacecraft re-entry conditions.

Explore the stories behind these applications and learn how different infrared technologies can be configured around specific equipment and process requirements.
