This week is set aside to honor professionals in the water and wastewater industry who are essential to the health, safety, and daily life of every community. They’re often behind the scenes, but their work makes modern life possible:

- They protect public health by ensuring drinking water is safe and wastewater is properly treated.

- They keep essential services running for homes, businesses, schools and hospitals.

- They respond around the clock to leaks, equipment failures, severe weather, and other emergencies.

- And they’re trusted stewards of critical infrastructure, maintaining complex systems that most people rarely think about until something goes wrong.

Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) encourages all members to take time this week to honor the water and wastewater operators in their communities who keep clean water flowing and wastewater moving safely!

Today, our office crew traded their desks for hard hats (well… almost! 😄) and headed to the Red Rock Hydroelectric Project near Pella for an up-close look at one of the renewable energy resources that helps power communities like ours.

🌊 Did you know?
• The Red Rock Hydroelectric Project uses the power of flowing water from Lake Red Rock to generate clean, renewable electricity.
• The facility is capable of producing up to 55 megawatts of electricity during periods of high water flow—enough to power approximately 18,000 homes.
• The project began commercial operation in 2021 and is the second-largest hydroelectric generating facility in Iowa.
• The electricity generated is delivered directly into the regional power grid, helping provide reliable energy to municipal utilities across the region.

We’re always looking for opportunities to learn more about the systems that help keep the lights on and better serve our customers. A big thank you to everyone at Red Rock for the informative tour and for sharing how renewable hydropower plays an important role in our energy future!

The end of an era.

Today, our crew removed the last overhead electric pole in Woodbine, marking the completion of a project that has transformed our community and made local history.

For decades, utility poles and overhead power lines were a familiar part of our landscape. Today, that chapter came to a close as Woodbine Municipal Light & Power officially completed the transition to a fully underground electric distribution system.

This milestone didn’t happen overnight. It represents years of planning, investment, determination, and the hard work of many dedicated employees past and present. Most importantly, it reflects our commitment to providing safe, reliable electric service to the community we are proud to serve.

As we celebrate 85 years of public power in Woodbine, we couldn’t think of a more fitting reminder of how far we’ve come. The photos of our crew taking down the final pole capture more than a job completed, they capture a moment that future generations will look back on as a turning point in our utility’s history.

To our crew: thank you for your hard work, dedication, and pride in serving this community every day.

Today wasn’t just the removal of a pole.

It was the completion of a vision.

Here’s to the next chapter of powering Woodbine.
