🚨 COMMUNITY SCAM ALERT – ROLL OFF DUMPSTER SCAM -PLEASE SHARE 🚨
We want to make our customers and neighbors aware of a roll-off dumpster scam that is becoming increasingly common. Unfortunately, we have seen a drastic increase in these cases this year all over Maryland.
Here’s how the scam works:
Someone advertises roll-off dumpster rentals online or on social media platforms, often at an attractive flat rate. The customer pays that person through Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, or another person-to-person payment method.
The scammer then contacts a legitimate hauling company, like ours, orders the dumpster for the customer’s address, and pays the hauler using a stolen credit card number.
The homeowner receives the dumpster and believes everything is legitimate. Unfortunately, the stolen card may not be discovered until after the dumpster has been delivered and filled. When the fraudulent payment is reversed, the legitimate hauler has not been paid for the service. The homeowner may then be responsible for paying the actual hauling company as well, meaning they could end up paying twice.
Meanwhile, the scammer disappears, and because of the payment methods commonly used in these scams, recovering the money you originally paid can be extremely difficult, if not impossible.
⚠️ Before renting a dumpster:
• Verify who you are doing business with and make sure they are a legitimate company.
• Be cautious of prices that seem too good to be true.
• Be especially careful when someone requires payment through Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, or similar services.
• Whenever possible, book and pay directly with a verified hauling company rather than through an unverified third party.
We also ask for your patience and understanding if a legitimate hauler takes additional steps to verify your identity or payment method. These extra precautions may take a little more time, but they are being put in place to help protect both the hauling company and our customers from fraud and unnecessary financial loss.
We hate seeing people, businesses and other haulers in our community become victims of this scam. The more people who know about it, the harder it becomes for scammers to succeed.
