Massachusetts homeowners can now earn an additional $0.03 for every kWh their qualifying solar system produces through SMART 3.0 — and qualifying low-income homeowners may receive $0.06/kWh.

Why does that matter?

Because this incentive is paid based on your system’s solar production. For example, a qualifying system producing 10,000 kWh in a year could earn about $300 annually at the standard 2026 SMART 3.0 rate.

That’s on top of the value of the electricity your system produces for your home.

For homeowners, the benefit is simple: solar may create value in more than one way — by helping reduce how much electricity you need to buy from the utility and by earning an additional production-based incentive through SMART.

The actual benefit will depend on your system size, production, property, utility, and eligibility.

Connecticut homeowners have new protections when going solar or adding battery storage. ☀️🔋

As of October 1, new state rules strengthen requirements for residential solar and energy storage providers and lenders.

One of the biggest changes: if you request a payoff statement or transfer documentation in writing, it must generally be provided within 7 days. If that deadline is missed, the provider or lender must credit your account $250.

The law also adds stronger consumer protections around certain commissions, rebates, discounts, and sales practices, with a statewide consumer handbook expected by the end of 2026.

If you’re considering solar or battery storage, take the time to understand the contract, financing, projected production, incentives, and what happens if you sell your home.

Massachusetts just released new data on the value of solar — and the numbers are worth paying attention to. ☀️

According to a new state study, for every $1 spent on the SMART solar program, Massachusetts ratepayers received an estimated $1.49 in direct utility-system benefits.

The study also found that solar installed since 2018 has helped create savings for households across the state — including homes without solar.

That’s an important reminder: residential solar isn’t only about what happens on one roof. When designed and deployed well, it can also reduce strain on the larger electric system.
