Welcome Back to Cattle Conundrum!

A dairy producer is experiencing a group of fresh cows that appear lethargic and have developed yellow, watery, foul-smelling diarrhea. Upon examination, several cows have fevers ranging from 104-107°F and appear dehydrated.

Concerned about the situation, the producer contacted their veterinarian, who collected manure samples and submitted them to a diagnostic lab for analysis.

Welcome back to Cattle Conundrum!
Over the last two weeks, we've explored the signs of Pinkeye (IBK) and discussed environmental factors that can contribute to outbreaks.
While reducing environmental pressures is an important step, Pinkeye isn't always as simple as it seems.
Management practices that may help reduce Pinkeye challenges include:
• Fly control programs
• Maintaining and clipping pastures when needed
• Providing adequate shade
• Supporting nutrition and overall herd health
• Utilizing diagnostics
• Incorporating Pinkeye vaccination strategies when appropriate

But what happens when outbreaks continue despite these efforts?
Pinkeye cases can involve multiple bacterial species, including 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘹𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘴, 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘹𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘷𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘪, and 𝘔𝘺𝘤𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘮𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘷𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘪. Identifying which organisms are present in a herd can provide valuable insight when developing an effective management plan.
In addition, antimicrobial resistance patterns can change over time. Treatments that have historically been effective or commonly used may not always be the best choice for every herd today. Diagnostic testing can help veterinarians make more informed treatment and management recommendations based on the pathogens involved and their current susceptibility patterns.

Why diagnostics matter:
• Help identify pathogens involved in an outbreak
• Detect the presence of 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘹𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘴, 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘹𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘷𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘪, and 𝘔𝘺𝘤𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘮𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘷𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘪
• Evaluate antimicrobial sensitivity to support treatment decisions
• Provide insight into herd-specific disease challenges
• Support veterinarian management decisions
• Help guide future control strategies

Diagnostic results may also help veterinarians and producers determine whether an autogenous vaccine should be considered as part of a herd-specific approach.
