A cactus may hold one of the most surprising answers to plastic pollution.
Mexican researcher Sandra Pascoe Ortiz from the University of Valle de Atemajac has developed a biodegradable plastic made from the juice of the prickly pear cactus, also known as nopal. Unlike petroleum-based plastics that can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, this cactus-derived material can break down in soil within about a month and dissolve in water within just a few days.
What makes the invention even more powerful is its safety profile. The material is made from natural compounds and is reported to be non-toxic, meaning it poses far less risk to animals, marine life, and humans compared with conventional plastics that fragment into harmful microplastics.
The idea began as a chemistry experiment but has now grown into a larger research effort involving collaborators from the University of Guadalajara. Scientists and industry partners are exploring whether this cactus-based polymer can be scaled for real-world use, especially in packaging and single-use plastic alternatives.
As millions of tons of plastic waste continue entering oceans and ecosystems every year, innovations like this show how nature itself may help us redesign the future of materials.
