The average American house size of about 1,000 square feet pays a monthly electric bill of $120. When you go solar, the power generated by your solar panels replaces the electricity you buy from the utility company, reducing or completely eliminating that bill. Though solar is a big purchase up front, that investment quickly pays for itself in energy savings over the life of ownership. A simple mock up calculation: In order to off-set the $120/month utility bill you will need to purchase about 10 panels at 400 watts, the cost to have them installed by a contractor is about $3.5/watt therefore the total cost of solar is about 4,000 watts * 3.5 = $14,000. So how long will it take to get a full return on your investment? let's do the math: If the electricity bill is $120 each month and the solar purchase is reducing that bill to nearly zero, then all we need to do is divide the total cost of solar by what you pay each month: $14,000/($120/month) = 117 months which equals: about 10 years. If the average warranty of solar production is 25 years then you will get more than double your money back for the life of the solar, especially since we have not included the rise in energy costs 25 years down the line and that for average quality solar panels they will STILL be producing 80% of energy even after their 25 years of warranty is up.
