Being in business doesn’t mean you have to say yes to everything.

Could we take on drywall? Sure.

Could we try microcement? Probably.

Could we start adding a bunch of different services just because there’s money in them? Absolutely.

But at some point, you have to respect your trade enough to know where your real strength is.

For us, that’s tile.

That’s where our experience is.
That’s where our eye is trained.
That’s where we know the details.
That’s where we can stand behind the finished product.

If somebody else is better at a specific service, let them handle it.

There’s nothing wrong with that.

Same thing with content.

You don’t need some crazy setup to start showing your work.

Grab your phone.
Set up a tripod.
Document what you’re already doing.
Upload it.
Be yourself.

Your day-to-day work already gives you plenty to talk about.

Get really good at what you do, show people the process, and let the rest build from there.

A lot of younger contractors see the big project, the big number, the big opportunity… and immediately want to jump on it.

I get it.

But one of the biggest things you have to learn is what your company is actually ready to take on.

How many people do you have?
How experienced is your crew?
Who’s strong at showers?
Who’s better on floors?
Who can handle detailed miters, epoxy work, layout, waterproofing, and all the things that come with higher-level installs?

That matters.

Because taking on something too big before your team is ready can do more damage than good.

We’re still figuring things out too.

We’re still climbing the mountain.

We’re not sitting here pretending we’ve already made it.

But we’ve learned enough through building our companies, making mistakes, hiring, taking on projects, and being in the field to help other tile contractors navigate some of those same decisions.

That’s what we’re working toward now.

Creating a place where younger contractors can ask the questions they usually don’t know who to ask.

Where do I start?
Who do I hire?
What kind of projects should I take?
How do I know when I’m ready for more?

We’re opening that door.

Because if we can help the next generation climb a little smarter, the whole trade gets better.

A lot of the tile you see in Spanish-inspired homes just makes sense out here in Arizona.

The warm tones, natural textures, variation in color, it all works with the desert landscape instead of fighting against it.

But choosing the right material goes deeper than just liking the color.

You’re looking at the size.
The thickness.
The finish.
How the material is going to transition.
How it works with everything around it.

That’s where experience really starts to matter.

Alberto and I both grew up in this trade as second-generation tile contractors, so we’ve seen a lot of different materials, installations, and design styles over the years.

That background is a big part of why we’re able to work with homeowners, builders, and other tile contractors and help make sure the material actually fits the project.

The best design choices usually feel like they belong in the environment.

And for Arizona, those warmer, more natural finishes are hard to beat.

All my second generation contractors know what I’m talking about 😂

Your Reputation Is Worth More Than One Big Job

A lot of guys hear, “bite off more than you can chew and figure it out.”

Sometimes that works.

In our trade, it can also destroy your reputation.

Tile takes years to really understand. Prep, waterproofing, layout, materials, managing crews, estimating, systems, insurance, payroll… there’s a lot more behind running a successful company than being able to set tile.

And even when your company is growing, you still have to respect what you’re ready for.

There’s nothing embarrassing about saying, “I’m not ready for that size of commercial project yet.”

I’d rather turn down one job than take something we can’t execute properly and have our name attached to bad work.

That’s part of why we’re working on something to help other tile contractors—whether they’re just getting started or already established.

How do you get your first jobs?
Who do you hire first?
How do you set up payroll and insurance?
What systems do you need?
When are you actually ready for the next level of work?

We’ve learned a lot of this by being in the field and building our companies in real time.

If we can help the next guy avoid some of the mistakes we made, that’s worth sharing.

Because at the end of the day, your reputation is the business.

The next step for the tile industry is to become more united & Alberto Cano are going to be building just that! 🤫

One thing homeowners don’t always realize is how much the source of the material can affect the finished product.

With mosaic tile, we’re working with grout joints that can be around a sixteenth of an inch or even tighter.

So if one piece is slightly out of line, you see it.

And once the grout goes in, that discrepancy can stand out even more.

Could we sit there and manipulate every individual piece by hand?

Absolutely.

But when the material comes from the right vendor and the mosaic sheets are properly aligned from the start, it allows us to focus on doing the installation at the level it should be done.

And if something is off, we’re catching it before the client ever has to.

That’s part of protecting our reputation.

There are a lot of little details behind the scenes that never make it onto social media because we handle them before they become a problem.

Those are usually the details that give contractors the gray hairs. 😂

But that’s also the standard.

If I wouldn’t be proud to put it on the front page and show it off, I’m not presenting it to the client.
