A principios del siglo XIX se inició una etapa de emigración desde Alemania (Idar-Oberstein), a Brasil (Río Grande do Sul), una zona en la cual se descubrían ricos yacimientos de ágatas, amatistas y gran variedad de otros minerales, desde donde empezó a llegar el material en bruto a Alemania. Se trataban siempre de empresas familiares, que conservaban su base en Idar, y enviaban a algún
integrante de la familia a comprar – o extraer – el producto en Sudamérica. Este proceso sucedió en la familia Becker, pero en forma mas o menos fortuita alrededor de 1850, una rama de la familia supo de la existencia de yacimientos en el norte de Uruguay, particularmente en la zona de Catalán, y comenzó a realizar allí compras y extracciones. A fines de siglo (1890) Augusto Becker, compró una fracción de campo en Catalán, donde se asentaron para desde allí realizar sus negocios. Hasta la segunda guerra mundial (1939), la firma se llamaba Becker & Co y mantuvo el sistema de tener su sede en Idar. En ese momento se separaron como empresas los dos hermanos, pero no comercialmente, quedando en Alemania Becker & Co siendo propietario Osmar Becker, mientras en Artigas trabajaba independiente Carlos Augusto Becker (nieto de Augusto quien había comprado las tierras). Así llegamos hoy a la empresa local con la quinta generación de la familia Becker. Actualmente las minas siguen estando en el viejo campo de Catalán, y la variedad de productos derivados crece.
