✨ When a molecule is “redesigned” to search for new medicines - The research of Prof. Thanh Vinh Nguyen

💊 What if, instead of creating a completely new molecule from scratch, chemists could start with a molecule that already has biological activity and “redesign” its structure to search for new drug candidates?

💡 This is one of the current research directions of Prof. Thanh Vinh Nguyen, Professor at the School of Chemistry, University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. Prof. Vinh graduated in Industrial Chemistry from UNSW and received his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the Australian National University (ANU) under the supervision of Prof. Michael Sherburn.

🎓 He subsequently conducted postdoctoral research in organocatalysis at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, RWTH Aachen University, Germany, supported by an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellowship. He established his independent research group at Curtin University in 2013, joined UNSW in 2015, and was promoted to Professor in 2026.

🧪 Through the skeletal editing of bioactive molecules, his group explores ways to modify the structures of biologically active molecules, generating new structures and expanding chemical space to identify potential new directions for drug discovery.

⚗️ Moreover, Prof. Vinh's research focuses on organocatalysis, aromatic cation activation, synthetic organic methodology, asymmetric synthesis, and medicinal chemistry. His group develops new synthetic methods to access diverse and complex molecular architectures, particularly natural products and biologically active compounds, with applications in pharmaceutical research.

🧬 In parallel, his ARC Discovery Project for 2026–2028 focuses on developing rapid and versatile methods for the synthesis of N-heterocycles, an important class of structures in organic and medicinal chemistry.

🏅 Prof. Vinh's academic contributions have been recognized through numerous honors and fellowships, including an ARC Future Fellowship, an ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA), the 2016 Athel Beckwith Lectureship and Medal, and the 2026 Mary Garson Medal from the Organic Chemistry Division of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI).

🔬 This September, Prof. Thanh Vinh Nguyen will join the VinFuture InnovaConnect 2026 series in Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City alongside Prof. David MacMillan and other leading scientists under the theme “Catalyzing Innovation in Chemistry and Drug Discovery.”

Join VinFuture InnovaConnect 2026 to explore new questions in chemistry, emerging directions in drug discovery, and new possibilities for the future of science in Viet Nam.

Nguyễn Thành Vinh, Giáo sư tại Trường Hóa học, Đại học New South Wales (Úc). GS. Vinh tốt nghiệp ngành Hóa học Công nghiệp tại Đại học New South Wales và nhận bằng Tiến sĩ Hóa hữu cơ tại Đại học Quốc gia Úc (ANU), dưới sự hướng dẫn của GS. Michael Sherburn.

💊 Her path in chemistry began at Cornell University, where she received her B.S. in chemistry, before earning her PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. During graduate school, Dr. Kim pursued her independent graduate proposal idea and exemplified the first conceptually novel organo-catalytic reaction using light to induce asymmetry. Following her degree, she continued her chemistry education at the Univ. of Basel, Switzerland, studying the kinetics of short-lived organic intermediates.

✨ From fundamental chemistry to pharmaceutical research and therapeutic development, Dr. Kim’s career reflects the many ways chemistry can become a catalyst for innovation.
