πβοΈ Groundbreaking Ceremony Successfully Held for the Design and Construction of Norsup Airport to Accommodate ATR 72-600 Project on Malekula Island π»πΊ
Yesterday, we proudly celebrated the commencement of the Design and Construction of Norsup Airport to Accommodate ATR 72-600 Project on Island, marking an important milestone in the development of Vanuatuβs transport infrastructure. πποΈ
The project will upgrade the existing Norsup Airport to meet 3C airport standards, allowing the safe operation of ATR72-600 aircraft. Designed in accordance with Australian Standards and international civil aviation requirements, the project includes:

Upgrading the existing 960m runway to a new 1,315m Γ 30m runway

Construction of a 900m temporary runway
β
Construction of a new 1,228mΒ² passenger terminal building π’

Installation of airfield lighting and supporting facilities π‘
β
Establishment of an asphalt batching plant βοΈ
β
Placement and compaction of runway base materials π§

Laying of approximately 59,990mΒ² of asphalt concrete pavement π£οΈ
π° Funded by the Government of Vanuatu, this project will significantly improve airport operations and aviation services, making travel safer, more efficient, and more reliable for local communities and visitors alike.
π΄ Once completed, the upgraded airport will strengthen connectivity between Malekula, Port Vila, and surrounding islands, supporting tourism, trade, investment, and job creation. It will also improve access to essential services and enhance disaster preparedness and emergency response capabilities across the region.
