Beneficiaries are benefiting from the power access. Congratulations ❤️ 🎊
In the remote community of Loltong on Northern Pentecost Island, Vanuatu, teacher Peter Sivehi embodies the transformative power of energy. Once limited to traditional teaching methods, he now uses a range of digital tools, completely changing how he educates his students. Thanks to a new electricity supply at Vulumanu Junior Secondary School, Peter's science classes are now interactive and modern. He uses PowerPoint presentations, and his students in grades 7 through 10 tackle hands-on projects like online research and GPS mapping exercises.
The school and its approximately 100 students has been powered by clean, sustainable energy since mid-2022. This was made possible by an 8.8 kW pico-hydro PV solar hybrid mini-grid system. The installation was a collaboration, funded by the Global Environment Facility and UNDP, with co-financing from the Vanuatu Government and the Department of Energy through the BRANTV project.
This successful pilot project has become a blueprint for progress, inspiring the construction of three new pico-hydro systems at Waterfall, Melsisi, and Larimaat. Funded by the Japan - The Government of Japan as part of the Vanuatu Green Transformation Project, these new systems will have a combined installed capacity of 65 kW and include a 30 km electrical distribution network. This expansion is expected to directly benefit 3,000 people.
