A green and red aurora sweeps across Earth’s horizon above the city lights of Europe in this photo captured by astronaut Chris Williams aboard the International Space Station on Jan. 19.

Known as the northern lights (aurora borealis) or southern lights (aurora australis), these glowing ribbons are created by space weather — the constant interaction between the Sun and Earth’s magnetic field. When energetic particles from the Sun collide with atoms and molecules in our atmosphere, they produce the shimmering colors we see as auroras.

As Artemis II travels around the Moon, 34 selected volunteers — from ham radio enthusiasts to commercial service providers — will attempt to passively track the Orion spacecraft.

The data collected by the participants will be analyzed by NASA to gain a better understanding of external tracking capabilities as the agency shifts to a commercial-first approach, ultimately strengthening the infrastructure needed to support future Moon to Mars objectives. LOTS of questions about tonight's lunar eclipse. First of all, unlike a solar eclipse, you can look at it to your hearts content. No worries about eye damage. Secondly, totality occurs at 2:58 am. Let's hope the clouds clear out.
