While uneventful for many, today was very special for one individual in our community. It marked the beginning of a long journey towards recovery from addiction.
While stories like these aren’t rare, they are often hidden in the background. Drowned out by hate, debate, fear mongering, and rhetoric from all parts of the spectrum. This toxicity is something we have all been guilty of participating in.
This case in particular marked a suprising and exciting twist wherein folks from all stripes and ideologies participated in making this trip possible for this person. It has given us tremendous hope as we ramp up support for others as they begin or continue on their journey through and beyond addiction, whatever that may look like to them.
So with that, let’s make 2024 a year where we celebrate those sparks of glimmering hope and the success of our peers rather than the darkness we have become so focused on. A year where we ask ourselves “how can I make help?” instead of finding ways to bash and spew hate. Try to seek insight and context into why your neighbors hold the views they do rather than attack them on face value. Most importantly, realize that behind every comment, message.
, post, video, and voice, there is a person. A human who is worth respecting. One who can hold a vastly different opinion than you, yet still be your friend. With the age of the internet we seemed to have lost that.
Let’s make 2024 about community.
