I've invited you (a special, select few) to participate in an MSc project study on an invasive beetle which is going to destroy Britain's pine and conifer forests if it can't be contained.
Detection dogs can find this beetle in Sweden and Austria with great success, but the science-bit is lacking, and for our Forest Research team to welcome holistic methods like this into government policy, they have asked for a pilot study. That's what this is; a test to see if a dog's nose will detect the scent of the beetle under controlled conditions.
If you are on board, I will send you some kit and video guides will be uploaded here. The videos will teach you how to train your dog to detect the beetle. It isn't harmful to dogs, and the method is backed up by one of Britain's best search trainers, Mick Swindells @ Search Dogs UK. Mostly, the dog think scent work is a great game and they get treats. If you are onboard, GREAT! Participation won't earn you any rewards other than having an extra excuse to play with your dog. BUT I will make a donation to the Gurkha Welfare Trust for everyone who signs up. Money to a good cause and fun for your dog!
