Thavan Naidoo - Intertek industry services

Thavan Naidoo holds the position of Food and Business Assurance Business Line Leader at Intertek, a global provider of Assurance, Testing, Inspection and Certifications services. As the head of this business line, Thavan works with several local and multinational companies, from major retailers, food manufacturers, FMCG companies and more.

Thavan has a myriad of experience in the Food Industry, spanning over 30 years. He has experience in Food Inspection, Lab Management, Technical Management at processing plants, he also spearheaded the R&D team and developed a popular menu item at one of the largest global fast-food chains.

Thavan is passionate about Food Safety and as such has published numerous articles in popular publications, he has also been a Keynote Speaker at many events. He is a registered lead auditor with SAATCA (South African Auditors & Training Certificate Association) and is a Member of the Institute of Directors.

Meet our Speaker - Prof. Atheesha Singh

Professor Atheesha Singh is an Associate Professor at the Water and Health Research Centre, University of Johannesburg. With over 15 years of experience in microbiology and public health, her research explores water quality, hygiene, and microbial risks in natural and built environments, with an emphasis on Legionella and waterborne pathogens. She leads interdisciplinary collaborations on water safety and WASH interventions and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. Prof. Singh has presented her work at numerous international scientific conferences and represented South Africa at the 2023 United Nations Water Conference in New York.
A committed mentor and laboratory scientist, she serves on institutional and national research committees, acts as an NRF reviewer, and advocates for gender equity in science through her long-standing role with the L’Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science Programme. In 2025, she was recognised as a Top 5 Finalist in the Women in STEM category at the HERS-SA (Higher Education Resource Services – South Africa) Higher Education Women Leaders Awards (HEWLA). Prof Singh is a SACNASP-registered Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.) in Microbiology, accredited by the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions. and is an inducted member of the Royal Society of Biology (UK). She is widely recognised for her mentorship of postgraduate and early-career researchers, and for creating inclusive, high-performance academic environments.

Meet our speaker for our 2025 Legionella pneumophila Conference - Dr Noncy Gomba

Dr Annancietar (Noncy) Gomba is a senior research scientist in the Immunology and Microbiology Section. She holds a PhD from the University of Pretoria (UP), MSc and BSc degrees from the University of Zimbabwe, and an MBA from Midlands State University, Zimbabwe. Dr Gomba joined the NIOH in 2017, where she has been responsible for the management of the Waterborne Pathogen Laboratory, and is involved in teaching and training through development and management of training programmes, information dissemination, postgraduate student supervision and mentorship, and examination of master’s student dissertations. Dr Gomba’s research interests include water/ wastewater and environmental microbiology, water reuse, and alternative water sources. She is a member of the Water Institute of Southern Africa, and the Legionella Action Group in South Africa, and serves as a member of reference groups on several Water Research Commission (WRC) research projects.

Meet our speaker Rodney Genricks - the man behind Eco-Tabs

Eco Tabs Gauteng (PTY)Ltd (ETG) was established for the express purpose of the remediation of water bodies. This process developed from mechanical remediation of sludge removal at the New Vaal Colliery, for which the company received the top project of the year award, to Hyacinth removal and then the Bioremediation of sludge in multiple water bodies (including Hartbeespoortdam).

The challenge of water hyacinth removal in 2010 led to the realization for the necessity for the rehabilitation and removal of organics in the water bodies. Due to the dynamics of the protocol whereby oxygen and class 1 bacteria would be infused, a total research process had to be undertaken. The first large project undertaken was the remediation of the Blue Dam in Johannesburg that was filmed for 50/50 in 2011. This was an incredible success with all parameters achieved, leading to a multiple of dam and waterway remediations for JHB Water.

Steven Lea is an experienced Water Treatment practitioner with 4 decades of experience. He has a BSc microbiology and biochemistry (Wits) and has been involved in Legionella risk assessments, treatment and monitoring over this time with most of the large corporate chemical companies in SA.
