DID YOU KNOW?
Those numbers and letters on the side of your tyres aren't just random codes—they hold vital safety information that dictates how your vehicle performs, handles weight, and stays safe on the road!
Here is what a standard tyre marking like 205/55 R16 91V actually means:
- 205 — Tyre Width (mm): The width of the tyre measured from sidewall to sidewall in millimeters (205 mm).
- 55 — Aspect Ratio / Profile (%): The height of the sidewall as a percentage of the width. Here, the height is 55% of 205 mm (approx. 112.75 mm). Lower numbers mean lower-profile tyres.
- R — Construction: Indicates Radial ply construction, the industry standard for strength and flexible sidewalls in modern cars.
- 16 — Rim Diameter (Inches): The size of the wheel rim in inches that this tyre fits (16 inches).
- 91 — Load Index: A safety rating indicating the maximum load the tyre can support. 91 stands for a maximum load capacity of 615 kg per tyre.
- V — Speed Rating: The maximum safe speed capability under full load. A V rating means the tyre is rated up to 240 km/h.
Why Tyre Specifications Matter:
- Safety & Handling: Fitting tyres with lower load or speed ratings than recommended by your vehicle manufacturer can lead to sudden tread failure or blowouts.
- Speedometer Accuracy: Changing sidewall profile or rim size alters the rolling circumference, causing incorrect speed readings.
- Vehicle Wear: Incorrect sizes can rub against wheel arches or brake components and impair handling during sharp turns or wet conditions.
