Gare do Oriente - A Railway Station Built Like a Cathedral of Steel

Railway stations are often thought of as places we simply pass through. But some are engineering landmarks in their own right.
This week, we're heading to Lisbon, Portugal, to explore Gare do Oriente - one of Europe's most distinctive modern railway stations.

Opened in 1998, Gare do Oriente was designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava and has become one of Lisbon's most recognizable pieces of modern architecture.

The first thing that catches your eye is the enormous roof above the main railway platforms. Rather than using a conventional solid roof supported by large columns, the station uses an intricate steel framework inspired by the branches of trees.

Hundreds of individual steel members come together to create a repeating structural pattern that supports the roof high above the railway tracks. From below, the framework almost resembles a giant steel forest.

And that's exactly what makes this structure so impressive.

The steel framework isn't simply functional - it is the architecture.

The enormous open design allows natural light to flood the station while keeping the platforms largely free from bulky structural supports. This creates an open, spacious environment for thousands of passengers moving through the station every day.

Gare do Oriente also demonstrates one of the greatest advantages of structural steel: the ability to create large, complex spaces while maintaining relatively slender structural members.

Every connection and steel element has a purpose. Together, they create a structure that is strong enough to support the roof while remaining visually light and elegant.

More than 25 years after opening, the station continues to serve as an important transport hub connecting Lisbon by rail, metro and bus.
It's a perfect example of how structural engineering doesn't have to be hidden behind walls. Sometimes, the structure itself can become the most beautiful part of the building.

Steel isn't just what holds a structure together - sometimes, steel IS the architecture.

Some structures are designed simply to serve a purpose. Others become symbols of an entire country.

This week, we're heading to Qatar to take a closer look at Lusail Stadium, the spectacular centrepiece of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Located in the city of Lusail, the stadium was completed in 2021 and has a seating capacity of approximately 88,000, making it the largest stadium in Qatar.

From the outside, its golden façade and intricate geometric patterns immediately stand out. But above the thousands of spectators is where some of the most impressive engineering takes place.

The stadium's enormous roof is supported by a sophisticated structural system incorporating steel trusses and tension structures, allowing the roof to span the seating bowl while keeping the interior largely free of supporting columns.

This creates an unobstructed view for spectators while providing protection from Qatar's intense sun and heat.

The roof structure had to be engineered to handle significant loads from its own weight, environmental conditions and the forces generated by wind. Precision was essential, with huge steel components fabricated and assembled to create a structure capable of spanning the stadium's enormous footprint.

The result is a building where architecture and structural engineering work together. The steel isn't hidden away simply to hold the building up - it forms part of the design itself.

Lusail Stadium also demonstrates how modern steel construction allows architects to create spaces on a monumental scale without sacrificing aesthetics.

During the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the stadium hosted the final, bringing the world's attention to an extraordinary piece of modern engineering.

Today, Lusail Stadium stands as a reminder that structural steel can do more than create strength. It can create space, movement, beauty and possibility.

From bridges spanning oceans to stadiums filled with thousands of people, steel continues to provide the backbone for structures that bring the world together.

Steel isn't just part of the structure - it's the backbone that turns ambitious designs into reality.

Tokyo Skytree - A Steel Giant Built to Move

At 634 metres, the Tokyo Skytree isn't just one of the tallest structures in the world - it's an extraordinary demonstration of how structural steel and modern engineering can work together to withstand one of nature's greatest challenges: earthquakes.

Completed in 2012, the Tokyo Skytree was designed primarily as a broadcasting tower, replacing Tokyo Tower as the city's main television and radio transmission facility. Today, it has also become one of Japan's most recognizable landmarks.

Unlike a conventional skyscraper, the Skytree is essentially a massive steel lattice tower. Its framework is made up of thousands of steel members carefully connected to create a structure that is both incredibly strong and remarkably lightweight for its enormous height.

But the real engineering challenge wasn't simply making the tower tall.
Tokyo is one of the world's most earthquake-prone major cities, meaning the Skytree had to be designed to move safely rather than simply resist movement.

At the heart of the tower is a central reinforced-concrete shaft that works together with the surrounding steel structure. This innovative system helps absorb and control movement during earthquakes and strong winds, allowing the tower to sway without compromising its structural integrity.

The tower's three-legged base gradually transitions into a circular structure as it rises, while its steel framework creates the distinctive lattice appearance visible from across Tokyo.

Building a structure this tall in one of the world's busiest cities required extraordinary precision. Steel components had to be fabricated, transported and assembled with incredible accuracy, often high above the ground.

The result is more than a broadcasting tower. It is a testament to Japanese engineering, where strength isn't simply about resisting forces - it's about understanding them and designing around them.

Tokyo Skytree reminds us that some of the world's strongest structures are designed not to stand perfectly still, but to move when they need to.

Steel isn't just part of the structure - it's the backbone that allows us to build higher, stronger and smarter.
