⚡ Why Surge Protection is Critical During Load Shedding (and how it can save you thousands)
With load shedding hitting us daily, I'm seeing more and more damaged appliances in homes across the East Rand - TVs, fridges, microwaves, Wi-Fi routers, and expensive electronics getting fried by power surges.
What causes the damage?
It's not the power going OFF that's the problem - it's when it comes back ON. The sudden voltage spike can be 2-3x higher than normal, and that's what kills your electronics.
What should you protect?
❌ Don't rely on those cheap R150 multi-plug "surge protectors" from the supermarket - most don't actually protect against the big spikes.
✅ You need proper protection:
1. Whole-house surge protection (installed at your DB board)

Protects everything in your home
Costs around R1,500-R2,500 installed
Best option if you have expensive appliances

2. Quality point-of-use surge protectors

For individual devices (TV, computer, Wi-Fi router)
Look for ones rated for at least 600 Joules
Brands like Ellies, Gemlux rated for SA conditions

3. Unplug during load shedding (the free option!)

If you can't afford surge protection yet, just unplug expensive items during load shedding
Yes, it's annoying, but cheaper than replacing a R15,000 TV

Quick test: Is your current "surge protector" actually protecting you?
Check the box or plug - if it doesn't show a Joule rating (300J, 600J, etc.), it's probably just a fancy extension cord and won't save your TV when the power surges back.
My advice:
If you've already lost one appliance to load shedding, invest in proper protection NOW before you lose more. A R2,000 surge protector is cheaper than replacing a fridge (R8,000+), TV (R5,000+), and microwave (R2,000).

Prep work for an installation of a 450kva gen set. Installing MCCB for cable protection.

Troubleshooting 261kwh lithium battery pack, bulging pressure plate, revealing one cell had expanded. The result is poor performance of the whole system.
During the commission of the unit, one of the connectors was damaged, leading to a hot connection and affecting the overall performance of the pack.
