Why Fibre Utility Companies Need to Insist on SANS 754 Wooden Poles

The South African Utility Pole Association (SAUPA) has released an important document explaining why fibre network companies should insist on SANS 754-certified wooden poles—and why settling for cheaper alternatives simply isn't good enough.

Here's the bottom line:

✅ SANS 754 poles are built for the long haul — designed to last 30–35 years in the ground, with strict treatment standards, quality controls, and preservative requirements to resist decay, fungi, and insects.

❌ SANS 457 poles are agricultural and fencing poles — fine for farms and vineyards, but not designed for decades of utility service.

Using the wrong pole means premature failures, higher maintenance costs, safety risks, and unreliable networks for communities that depend on fibre connectivity.

SAUPA is calling on fibre network operators (FNOs) to specify SANS 754 in all procurement contracts and demand certified, properly marked, and independently tested poles. Contact us on 0832870903 for the full SAUPA document.

Brits Poles was proud to sponsor the Soutpansberg Bonsmara Auction this past Saturday, strengthening our connection with our valued customers and farming communities in the Far North.

☀️ It was one of those beautiful, sunny and warm days that only the northern parts of Limpopo can offer!
