Riaan Koppeschaar participated in a panel discussion about the factors that influence investor confidence and mining companies' capital allocation decisions at .

He reflected on Exxaro’s strategy - “our capital allocation approach is informed by our Sustainable Growth & Impact strategy. Since listing in 2006, we have paid 46 consecutive dividends, and benefitted from the stability from the Eskom business.

After paying dividends, we look at growth, and currently we are re-looking our capital allocation framework following the manganese transaction.

In terms of our strategy, ESG and decarbonisation are important and that’s why we have invested in Cennergi, our renewables business - not only to supply energy but for decarbonisation.

We continue to invest a lot of money in our host communities and employees under the pillars of enterprise and supplier development; mineral & succession planning, and education - where we invest in early childhood development centres.

All this work helps us have positive relations with our community stakeholders, and helps us maintain our social license to operate”.

Partnerships and collaboration are key to growing the South African mining industry

October 8: Joburg Indaba Chairman, Bernard Swanepoel kicked off the first day of Joburg Indaba asking attendees how we ‘keep the faith in the mining industry” without of course, fake optimism.

Several hundred CEOs, investors and policymakers engaged in frank discussions at the 13th annual Joburg Indaba, which kicked off today, Wednesday, 8 October 2025, at the Inanda Club, Sandton, Johannesburg. Joburg Indaba is hosted by Resources 4 Africa, in collaboration with Thinkspiration.

Swanepoel said: “We need a renewed sense of purpose. We need a globally competitive industry.”

For panellists a key constraint for the mining industry in South Africa is policy uncertainty.

Duncan Wanblad, CEO of Anglo American, said: “there are whole lot of uncomfortable truths. South Africa is under explored today because it had really unsupported policy for exploration for the last 20 years. That is really important in a mine’s life cycle. We are behind the curve. We need very strong leadership and policy. Absent that policy it will be very difficult to invest.”

Wanblad added: “I am optimistic. But I do have a healthy dose of realism. We have challenges. We know what they are [but] we have a strong coalition of the willing.”

Among the challenges industry executives highlighted were logistics, energy and that the cadastral system is not yet functioning.
