South Africa’s Constitutional Court Blocks Shell’s Wild Coast Exploration Plans

South Africa’s Constitutional Court has delivered a significant judgment for the country’s environmental future, blocking the continuation of Shell and Impact Africa’s controversial offshore oil and gas exploration plans along the Wild Coast.

The judgment, handed down on 14 August 2026, brings another major chapter in a legal battle that has been running for several years between oil and gas interests, government, environmental organisations and communities living along one of South Africa’s most environmentally sensitive stretches of coastline.

For me, this decision raises a much bigger question than simply whether Shell should be allowed to search for oil and gas off the Wild Coast.
