Thermoshield Heat Barrier Coating is a spinoff of the space program, and the insulating properties of ceramics. The heat barrier tiles used on the front of the shuttles are made up of millions of tiny hollow ceramic spheres that form an extremely effective insulating barrier, against the +/- 8000 degrees experienced on re-entry. These ceramic microspheres are now produced on a commercial scale and are the same beads that we import from the USA, to manufacture Thermoshield Heat Barrier Coating in this country. Each bead has a three hour heat threshold, and by applying a minimum of 4 layers of beads we are able to provide 12 hours’ worth of heat protection during the day and, to a lesser extent, 12 hours’ worth of insulation during the night. Each bead is between 80 and 120 microns in diameter and the product is applied at a total wet film thickness of at least 500 microns, ensuring a minimum of 4 bead layers. We are however able to apply thicker coatings should the client require it. A study was conducted of the application we did at Vital Foods in Cape Town. This is an air-conditioned facility with a clip-lock roof of 7800 sqm and which is insulated on the underside with Iso-board. The electrical consumption prior to, and after the Thermoshield application was recorded, and found that there was an 800,000kwh reduction in their annual consumption. This translates into an average of 100 kWh per sqm per year, and will pay for itself within a year, at today’s electricity prices. As the product is applied three times thicker than other conventional coatings, it is rather like dipping the roof in a bucket of liquid plastic, filling minor holes and protecting the roof from the elements for at least 10 years. Reduced Maintenance. As the roof sheets themselves are insulated, Thermal Shock (expansion and contraction) is virtually eliminated. Fasteners are no longer being pulled loose or wallowing out the holes in the roof sheet, particularly at ridging’s. Membrane flashings last many times longer and long sheet lengths are less subject to distortion. HVAC systems need less maintenance, use less power and in the case of chiller systems, use less water. Global Warming. Thermoshield is the most effective and economical intervention in the battle against global warming, and a very simple way of complying with the new energy act regulations. These will require a 10% consumption reduction by very large users. Failure to do so will result in punitive charges for any consumption over the allotted amount. We also have a moral obligation to future generations, to change the mind-set from using more electricity less efficiently, to one of using less electricity more efficiently.
