SSBS' test work capabilities now also includes Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) test work for backfill applications. UCS tests are used to determine the strength development of potential backfill mixtures and binders. These tests are used to ultimately optimise backfill recipes for our clients by taking binder requirements as well as backfill flowability into consideration.

SSBS is pleased to announce and welcome its newest member, Joshua Asquith. Josh joined the SSBS team as a Junior Process Engineer.

Josh has a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, specialising in Woven Fabric Membrane Technology. Prior to working for Sustainable Slurry and Backfill Solutions, Joshua worked in the Water Treatment Industry, focusing on the design, build and operation of wastewater treatment plants.

SSBS staff conducting soil permeability coefficient test work on a backfill sample that is being considered for a hydraulic fill using our Constant Head Permeability Rig.

The soil permeability coefficient is a measure which indicates the capacity of a backfill material to allow the flow of water through it. This is an essential property of the backfill material to assist in classifying the fill type (hydraulic or paste fill) as well as to undertake the design of underground containment fences (backfill barricades).
