As a Hydrology Engineering student, I believe that solving future water and energy challenges requires interdisciplinary knowledge.”

🌍 Atoms Empowering Africa: Voices of the Winners

Today, Uwera Ange F***y from Rwanda shares her journey with us.

💬 “I was motivated to participate because I believe that young people have an important role to play in shaping the future of clean energy, especially in Africa. The most memorable part of the experience was meeting participants from different countries who shared the same passion for the peaceful use of nuclear technology.”

💬 “When my teammate Kelia Raissa Akaliza and I heard our names announced during the closing ceremony of the Obninsk Tech Summer University 2026, we were overwhelmed with excitement and gratitude. This achievement meant much more than receiving an award. It showed me that our voices as African youth matter and that our ideas can have an international impact.”

💬 Ange advises future participants not to underestimate their potential and reminds them that “The nuclear community is looking for passionate young people who are ready to make a positive difference, and your contribution could be the one that inspires the next generation.”

🇹🇿 Meet Dr. Noel Mabele Dr. Noel, MD, a medical doctor from Tanzania who joined the Icebreaker of Knowledge 2026 expedition as an expert.

🎥 As part of the expedition’s educational programme, Dr. Noel shared his expertise with the students. One of the topics he covered was homeostasis, explaining how the human body responds to cold and changes in temperature.

Dr. Noel described the expedition as a very positive experience and highlighted its role in inspiring young people to develop a love of science. We are grateful to him for sharing his expertise with the participants and contributing to their Arctic learning journey!

⚛️ A nuclear reactor is the heart of a nuclear power plant

Inside a reactor, fuel assemblies made of enriched uranium are immersed in water. Controlled nuclear fission in the fuel releases heat, turning the water into high-pressure steam. This steam drives a turbine, generating electricity day and night.

🛡️ Control rods and advanced safety systems ensure the reaction stays stable and allow operators to shut the reactor down whenever needed. Modern reactors are housed in thick concrete and steel structures , providing multiple layers of protection and shielding.

🔬 Rosatom is constantly innovating to improve reactor efficiency. At the MIR.M1 research reactor, scientists are testing new fuel with higher uranium-235 enrichment and erbium neutron absorbers.

💡 These developments could allow reactors to operate longer between refuelling cycles, producing more low-carbon electricity with fewer interruptions.

🇿🇦 South African Lecturer Takes Part in Summer Programme in Russia

Tsholofelo Dorothy Modise, a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), recently participated in a Summer Programme in Russia.

🎓 Held by ETU ‘LETI’ from 20 July to 2 August, the programme included visits to Moscow, Obninsk and Saint Petersburg, as well as specialised programmes at the MEPhI Obninsk branch and the Rosatom Technical Academy.

The programme combined academic learning with cultural experiences. Dorothy was particularly inspired by Russia’s architectural heritage, the dedication of the lecturers and the opportunity to discover new ideas and expand her knowledge📝

Dorothy returned to South Africa with new knowledge, friendships, a deeper appreciation for Russian culture and a taste for a new favourite drink mors – a reminder that international academic experiences can leave an impression far beyond the classroom.

✏️ Pourquoi le graphite est-il indispensable dans certains réacteurs nucléaires ?

Lorsque l'on pense au graphite, on imagine souvent la mine d'un crayon. Pourtant, ce matériau joue aussi un rôle essentiel dans certains réacteurs nucléaires.

⚛️ Dans ces réacteurs, le graphite agit comme un modérateur : il ralentit les neutrons produits lors de la fission nucléaire. Des neutrons plus lents augmentent la probabilité de nouvelles réactions de fission, ce qui permet de maintenir la réaction en chaîne de manière contrôlée.

🔬 Le graphite est utilisé pour cette fonction car il résiste à des températures très élevées, conserve ses propriétés dans des conditions extrêmes et absorbe très peu de neutrons, ce qui le rend particulièrement adapté à certains types de réacteurs.

Tous les réacteurs nucléaires n'utilisent pas le graphite. Beaucoup emploient de l'eau comme modérateur, tandis que le graphite est choisi dans certaines conceptions en fonction de leurs caractéristiques techniques.

Derrière un matériau aussi simple en apparence se cache une technologie qui contribue depuis des décennies au fonctionnement sûr et efficace de certains réacteurs nucléaires💡

⚛️ Celebrating the Birthday of Russia’s Nuclear Industry

On 20 August, Russia marks the birthday of its nuclear industry.
It was on this day in 1945 that a Special Committee was established to oversee work on the use of atomic energy, laying the foundation for decades of scientific and technological development.

🔬 Since then, the industry has achieved major milestones – from launching the world’s first nuclear power plant in Obninsk to developing advanced reactors, nuclear icebreakers and peaceful nuclear technologies used in energy, medicine, agriculture and scientific research.

🌍 Today, this expertise also supports international cooperation with countries across Africa, contributing to the development of peaceful nuclear technologies, and scientific exchange.
