Interestingly, that's rarely the first question our engineers ask.

Before discussing inverters, batteries or solar panels, it's important to understand how the business consumes electricity:

2. How do seasonal changes affect operations?
3. Are there future expansion plans?

Without that understanding, designing a system becomes little more than making an educated guess.

One of our engineers came back from a site visit recently and made an interesting comment.
"The equipment is good," he said. "It's the design assumptions that have changed."

The business had grown, operating hours had shifted and new machinery had been added over the years. None of that was wrong. In fact, it's exactly what every business wants. The challenge was that the solar system had been designed for a very different operation.

It's something we see quite often.

A solar installation isn't static because the business behind it isn't static. Your production changes, and teams have expanded. And your electricity demand shifts. What made perfect sense five years ago may not be the best fit today.

We encourage clients to review their systems every few years. Not because we expect something to have failed, but because businesses evolve, and their energy strategy should evolve with them.

People are often surprised when we don't recommend upgrading a system.
(It happens more than you might think!)

A client will call because they believe they need more panels, a larger inverter or additional battery storage. We review the data, spend time understanding how the business operates and occasionally arrive at a different conclusion:

The battery settings need attention
The software needs updating
A few changes to the way electricity is being used during the day can make a noticeable difference. In some cases, the business has simply outgrown the assumptions the original design was based on.

Engineering isn't about finding reasons to sell more equipment. It's about solving the problem in front of you, even if that means recommending no new equipment at all.
